Dungeness Spit/National Wildlife Refuge with waterfront social afterwards
YOU MUST RSVP ON SNOJOKE WEBSITE TO ATTEND
Date: Sat July 12th
Meet: Carpools strongly suggested. We want to catch the Edmonds Ferry at 7:55 am.
It will take 30 minutes to cross and about 2 hours to get to the trail head.
Fees: R/T Ferry cost; $3 for every 4 people on the spit, $5 for Jan’s social
Difficulty: Blue (but only for length of 10 miles; easy flat beach hike otherwise)
Driving Directions once we get over the ferry:
From Sequim head west on US 101 for 5 miles. (From Port Angeles drive east for 12 miles.) Turn right (north) at milepost 260 onto oddly named Kitchen-Dick Road. At 3.3 miles, Kitchen-Dick sharply turns right, becoming Lotzgesell Road. In another 0.25 mile, turn left on Voice of America Road (signed "Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge, Dungeness Recreation Area"). Proceed through the Clallam County Park and campground, and in 1 mile come to the trailhead.
We will be hiking in one of Washington’s most unique and beautiful places. This is a very easy flat beach walk and we are walking out with a goal to hit the end where the lighthouse is at the low tide. It is 11 miles round trip with only 130 feet of elevation gain which happens from the parking lot down to the spit. Bring a lunch as we will be eating out at the end of the spit. There are plenty of picnic tables. It can get windy out there so bring a light jacket as well. Explore the lighthouse (free), which has been there since the late 1800’s.
We will be having a lovely waterfront social courtesy of club member, Jan Stimach, at her beautiful view home on the shores of Puget Sound in Port Ludlow. Please bring $5 to offset her costs and your own beer/wine.
Jan’s house: Address is 352 Margaret Street/Port Ludlow, WA 98365. Directions: Turn right onto the WEST side of Shine Road, go about 30 ft. & make an immediate right (do NOT stay on Shine) and then make an immediate left & you will be heading Southerly, down the hill. Turn right on Margaret St. & go to the end of the road. You will see it as the road starts in gravel. I am the last house on that road w/a greenish fence.
We will return via the Kingston Ferry, however, due to ferry traffic, exact time is TBD.
